ABC Practical Guide To Dog Training: Proven Techniques By A Trainer Of Trainers is an expertly written instructional by Steven Appelbaum (the President and CEO of Animal Behavior and Training Associates Inc., the largest independent dog training company in North America), designed specifically to teach the owner of a canine companion diverse behaviors on command. From learning how to make “pack theory” work to one’s advantage; to the simple basics of how a dog learns; to establishing obedience; to selecting the right professional trainer, ABC Practical Guide To Dog Training is a “must-read” for anyone responsible for the behavior and training of the family pet.

I’ll bet that I would like the ABC book and would still like to have a copy. I received the wrong book — not even close to the right subject — it was a sales book. I wrote to the vendor, via Amazon site, twice and still have not received even an acknowledgment, let alone the book. Odd, because all of my other Amazon purchases have gotten prompt, appropriate attention. Maybe there were glitches in the transmissions.

With in just a few hours of reading this book I was getting my dogs to behave. Steve talkes about a dogs place and how to make that happen. My dogs don’t rule the house any more. We do and we have 5 dogs. My dogs don’t jump on the furniture or on us anymore. Steve tells how the dogs can have learned behaviors that truely aren’t their fault. He will explain how to correct these unwanted behaviors. Don’t drop that dog off the human society get this book and work it out with your dog. You will be amazed. Easy reading and it all makes sense.

I really liked this book, especially the clear discussions about learning theory, using both positives and aversives correctly. How to teach most basic manners skills. I was, however, surprised by the omission of teaching a dog not to pull on leash! This is one of the most common complaints of dog owners, yet it is not covered in this book. Other than that, great stuff.
